Upper Highway Area Information

Upper Highway, KZN
A mere 35km from Durban is the Valley of a Thousand Hills and this unique part of KwaZulu Natal offers a wide variety of flora and fauna, nature trails, wildlife, abundant birdlife, e.g. crowned eagles, hornbills, etc. An array of authentic Zulu culture, charming B&B’s, fine old hotels and fascinating shopping experiences, from quaint village shops to state of the art shopping Malls, are all “right on your doorstep”!

The Upper Highway area (Kloof, Hillcrest, Everton, Gillitts, Hillcrest, Winston Park, Waterfall, Assagay, etc.) is renowned for its excellent schools, offering a dynamic educational environment and exceptional academic, sporting and cultural facilities.

Kloof, Everton and Gillitts are 30km from the centre of Durban and form the first “elevated” suburbs just beyond Durban’s humidity belt. Summer temperatures average between 18ºC to 29ºC and winter temperatures average between 12ºC to 20ºC. These Upper Highway suburbs are located within the sub-tropical climatic zone and are some 550 metres above sea level and are reputed to offer one of the healthiest climates in the world.

Kloof

Kloof, KwaZulu Natal
Kloof enjoys the reputation of being one of the most desirable residential areas in South Africa and its natural environment has been enhanced by its beautiful homes and gardens. Kloof has retained it’s unique village-like quality throughout the development that has taken place in the Upper Highway area. Many of the homes were originally farmlands and over the years, as demand for homes in the area increased, these farmlands were subdivided with stands averaging between a minimum of two acres (in some areas) and one half acres and an interesting blend of new and old architecture emerged. The lush and heavily wooded vegetation, which is a unique characteristic of the Upper Highway area, is still preserved today.

The town of Kloof surrounds the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, which is situated only a few kilometres from the centre of Kloof. This reserve offers spectacular views across the gorge and there are various picnic sites and organised trails for visitors to enjoy. Fauna in the reserve includes zebra, bush buck, duiker, mongoose, vervet monkey and there is an abundant birdlife and visitors are often rewarded by hearing or sighting crowned eagles, hornbills and loeries in the forests.

Hillcrest

Hillcrest, KwaZulu Natal
Hillcrest is very picturesque and is one of the oldest villages, having celebrated its 100th birthday just a few years ago and is one of the fastest developing areas in the Upper Highway. One of Hillcrest’s main attractions is “The Heritage Market”, a Victorian style shopping complex which exudes a certain Old World charm with gazeboes, lovely walkways, beautiful rose gardens, restaurants and many quaint shops.
